Gums that bleed when brushing, look red or recede are a sign of a problem in the tissues that hold the teeth. Early on, it can be reversed with professional cleaning and good care; if it progresses, teeth can loosen.

Treatment

Tartar and bacterial plaque on the root surfaces are cleaned under local anaesthesia. Healing is then measured, and surgery can be planned where deep pockets remain.

Step by step

  1. Measurement

Pocket depths and x-rays are assessed.

  2. Deep cleaning

Tartar and root surfaces are cleaned.

  3. Re-measurement

Healing is checked after 6–8 weeks.

  4. Maintenance

A care visit is planned every 3–6 months.

Questions about this treatment

Is it normal for my gums to bleed?

No. Regular bleeding is a sign of inflammation and should be examined.

Does scaling wear down teeth?
